Denny Brownrigg

Denny Brownrigg studied Exploration Geophysics MSc at the School of Earth and Environment.

Denny’s Career

A month after graduating from the University of Leeds, Denny started working as a Graduate Geophysicist at RSK Environment.

“I lead individual and multi personnel ground investigation projects as part of the Geophysics Team out of the Helsby office (Cheshire).”

“The job is largely split into two components the first being geophysical investigations including seismics (e.g. reflection, refraction and MASW), ERT, magnetics and electromagnetics, etc. The second part involves utility detection which incorporates radio-detection alongside GPR to find buried utilities.”

The influence of studying at Leeds on Denny’s career

During the first term, all the students had the opportunity to go on a fieldtrip to North Wales.

“For me, this was an essential module in cementing my future career choice. If I could brace the not so pleasant weather of Wales, still enjoy learning geophysics and work cohesively with my course mates, pursuing a career in near-surface seemed like the perfect choice for me.”

Choosing Exploration Geophysics

Denny chose to study the Masters programme at Leeds after hearing great reviews from past students.

“I knew I wanted to work within Geophysics and recognised that the majority of jobs within the UK involved near-surface geophysics, an element which a lot of other Masters programmes didn’t appear to touch on.”

After seeing the fieldwork module focusing on near-surface geophysics applications, choosing Leeds was a no brainer.

Best aspects of the course

“Apart from providing me with the academic theory to excel in obtaining my job and progress in my role, I underestimated how the facilities at Leeds would add to my development.”

The software packages available to us as students were of the same standard if not sometimes more sophisticated to what I am currently using at RSK.

“Having that familiarity with certain software packages has made it much easier adapting to new ones or continuing with the same programmes.”

Advice for future students

“For any student looking to explore near-surface geophysics as a possible career path, I would 100% recommend studying on the Exploration Geophysics MSc.”

The university as a whole is fantastic but meeting likeminded, lovely people on the course who I remain in contact with to this day, has always been my favourite outcome.
