Dom Keenan, MSc Sustainability and Consultancy alumni

Dom Keenan

What have you been doing since finishing your studies?

Since graduating from Leeds, I have moved to London and secured a position as a sustainability consultant.

I am working for a multi-disciplinary consultancy called WSP within their sustainability advisory business. Within my role as a Sustainability consultant I help a range I help public and private sector clients with their sustainability ambitions - specifically relating to carbon and GHG management, sustainability reporting and sustainability strategy.

What experiences at Leeds do you think have particularly helped with your career?

Working alongside such a talented, likeminded group of students during my time at Leeds University has been extremely valuable so far in my career. To have a network of close friends working in the same sector as you is extremely helpful for advice and expertise - and a few of my course mates are now colleaugues!

Why did you choose to study your particular course and why did you choose the University of Leeds?

This course offered the perfect platform needed to develop the professional skills required to become a sustainability consultant. At the time of applying, this MSc course was the only one that offered an industry placement and is also approved by the Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

What was the best aspect of your course?

The industry placement was a highlight for me. The opportunity to manage your own project for professional organisation was a stimulating experience that an invaluable experience when taking my first steps in to the sector. It also provides a great opportunity to make some valuable connections in your professional network.

What activities outside of your studies were you involved in?

Outside of studying, I volunteered for the Leeds Sustainability Service and played 5-a-side football.

What would you say to students thinking about studying your course?

Go for it! This course presented a great opportunity to gain the skillset and experience to be employed in a field that I am deeply interested in. Make sure to take advantage of any networking and extra-curricular activities. You’re only there for a short period time and you have a great opportunity to make important contacts that will play a role in your professional network for years to come.
