Reservoir Characterization of the Miocene Euphrates and Jeribe Formations in selected wells of several oil fields and outcrop section in Kurdistan, North East Iraq.

This research project is utilising well data and outcrop sections geographically located in the Northern part of Iraq and tectonically within the Low Folded Zone of the Iraqi main tectonic segments which are characterized by the existence of NW-SE trending low amplitude folds separated by relatively wide synclines. They comprise part of the many oil and gas fields within the Zagros Oil Province.
The Lower Miocene Euphrates and Jeribe Formations the focus of this investigation and they form important targets for exploration activities in Kurdistan. The rock comprises of chalky and recrystalized limestone beds forming known reservoir within oil fields where they have been penetrated. The beds contain a matrix porosity which is further enhanced by fracturing.

These carbonate beds show heterogeneity in their reservoir properties both laterally and vertically reflecting variation in the depositional environment and/or the subsequent diagenetic processes. We are actively exploring the productive sections of the Kurdistan Lower Miocene petroleum play by investigating petrophysical properties affecting their reservoir potential, assessing reservoir fluid saturations (water and hydrocarbon saturations) and the mobility of the hydrocarbons to identify the for best production methods in a different part of the Euphrates and Jeribe reservoir formations.
